Challenge Weekend is fun personal development weekend for people with Down syndrome aged 16 and over. Held twice a year at the Gold Coast and SunShine Coast Active Recreation Centres, participants ('Challengers') are allocated to small groups captained by a volunteer team leader who provides peer support for the duration of the weekend.
The aim of Challenge Weekend is to try new things and be pushed outside your comfort zone in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment. It’s not about being the best but it is about doing your best and having a go. It’s about recognising that sometimes there are things that make us feel a bit nervous because they are new or scary and that’s ok – and that when you have a go at things that make you feel nervous it can make you feel really good that you tried!
There are physical challenges (past weekends have included activities like canoeing, rock climbing and the giant swing), social challenges like team games and ball sports and emotional challenges like self-esteem workshops. We also incorporate some of the most popular activities from past DSAQ events such as the talent show, disco night and more.
Applications are open to anyone with Down syndrome aged 16 and over who is a current financial member of Down Syndrome Queensland. Information and application forms are sent to all current members, so we recommend that all interested parties ensure that their membership and contact information is up to date.
